Charles Cairns, MD.

Charles B. Cairns, MD, is the Walter H. and Leonore Annenberg Dean, and SVP of medical affairs at Drexel University College of Medicine and is a leader in emergency medicine and critical care. At Drexel, he has led new community and healthcare system partnerships across the region and country.

Previously, he served as Dean of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the United Arab Emirates University and as Dean of the College of Medicine and Assistant VP for Clinical Research at the University of Arizona.

Dr. Cairns also led a $1.2 billion partnership with Banner Health, which created one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the country. He has served as Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) United States Critical Illness and Injury Trials Group and as Principal Investigator of the DHS National Collaborative for Biopreparedness.

Most recently, he has been leading COVID-19 research and innovation efforts in understanding the immune response to severe SARS-CoV-2 infection as a clinical lead for the NIH COVID-19 IMPACC study, on the DSMB of the NIH convalescent plasma study and as Principal Investigator of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation project on the prediction of COVID-19 community infection and recovery in underserved areas.

Dr. Cairns has received numerous awards, including the American College of Emergency Physicians Outstanding Contribution in Research Award, Society for Critical Care Medicine Presidential Citation Award and the 2014 John Marx Leadership Award, the highest award of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. He has published more than 200 scientific articles & reviews, has secured more than $30 million in research funding and has served on numerous medical boards.
